Race Week Aches & Pains: Still OK to Run?

June 9, 2016

Race week aches and pains can be nerve-wracking, but they’re not uncommon. Still, experts say it’s important to know what’s normal — and what could be cause for concern.

“As you reduce your miles and get ready for race day, you may find yourself experiencing some new aches and pains,” said Nick Winkler, Licensed Athletic Trainer with Bellin Health Athletic Training Services. “They’re generally nothing to worry about, but there are some red flags to be aware of.”
Winkler suggests runners watch out for:

Shin Splints: Shin splints are the irritation of the muscle and muscle attachments to the shin. They can be quite painful and, on occasion, escalate to stress fractures.
Red Flag: If you have trouble walking or hopping, it’s not safe to run.

Plantar Fasciitis: Plantar fasciitis is pain in the heel or instep of the foot. It is generally at its worst first thing in the morning.
Red Flag: If pain is present throughout the day or while you’re running, consult your doctor or call the free Bellin Run injury hotline at (920) 430-4595.

Muscle Strain: Muscle strain is pain in the muscles, such as the hamstrings or quads. It is very common in runners.
Red Flag: Muscle pain that is accompanied by swelling or bruising should be evaluated.

In general, runners should be evaluated if they have pain that occurs with normal daily activities. Consult your primary care provider call our free Bellin Run injury hotline at (920) 430-4595 for a no-cost consultation.
