Start preparing now for this year’s Bellin Run
GREEN BAY— Looking to run the Bellin this year? “Get out there and start training today,” says Randy Van Straten, Bellin Run race director. “Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned athlete, it’s never too early to begin training. Plus, at this time of year, it’s a great excuse to get outside and enjoy the benefits of healthier living.”
Van Straten suggests the following training tips:
- Set measurable and attainable goals: “With a distance of 6.2 miles, participating in the Bellin Run is within everyone’s reach,” said Van Straten. “Start with small goals and work your way up so that your aspirations are attainable. And when you do meet those goals, be sure to reward yourself.”
- Listen to your body: Bellin Run finish times in 2007 ranged from about 28 minutes to nearly 2 hours and 30 minutes. “Don’t ever compare yourself to others,” Van Straten said. “Run within yourself and for yourself first.”
- Always warm up and cool down: Failure to properly stretch before and after training can significantly increase the chances of injury. Van Straten urges participants to include time for warm up and cool down in every training session. “Also consider learning how to use new tools like a heart rate monitor or foam roller,” Van Straten added.
Those looking to improve their time at this year’s Bellin Run can sign up for “Run a Better Bellin,” a training class to assist racers, runners and walkers prepare for the local 10K event.
The seven-week training class will be held Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m., beginning April 30, 2008, at the Green Bay Health & Athletic Performance Center, 1630 Commanche Ave., Green Bay. The cost of the program is $40.
The program is for participants at all skill levels and includes a customized training program, log book and training T-shirt. Registrations are due by April 25, 2008.
