Making strides to the finish line

Programs help runners, walkers of all skill levels prepare for Bellin Run

GREEN BAY— The Bellin Run is in sight for local runners and walkers.  For many, ongoing training programs will be the key to a more satisfying race day performance.

“While it’s never too late to participate in the Bellin Run, it’s certainly much easier if you begin a training program that can help get your mind and body on track for the event,” said Randy Van Straten, Bellin Run race director.

This year’s 32nd annual Bellin Run will take place Saturday, June 14, 2008.  The local run is now the nation’s fourth-largest timed 10K (6.2 miles).

Those looking for a training program have various options including:

  • Run a Better Bellin – The seven-week training program addresses the needs of walkers, runners and racers through classroom and practical training. Classes are held Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m., beginning April 30, at the Green Bay Health & Athletic Performance Center, 1630 Commanche Ave., Green Bay. The cost of the program is $40. Contact Phil Turnbull with Bellin Health Sports Medicine, at (920) 430-4734 or e-mail phturn@bellin.org for more information.
  • Corporate Challenge – The Bellin Run Corporate Challenge allows local corporations to compete on a participative and competitive basis, while promoting fitness and corporate camaraderie.  Many companies have started their own training sessions.  Now is the time to start co-workers on the path to a healthier lifestyle.  For more information, contact Carol LeGate, Bellin Run Corporate Challenge coordinator, at (920) 680-6262 or e-mail cglega@bellin.org.

  • Community Challenge – Group training runs and running seminars are popping up throughout Northeast Wisconsin as 18 local communities make way for the Bellin Run Community Challenge.  The community with the largest percentage increase of participation from last year will receive the Community Challenge traveling trophy.  To find out more, contact Linda Maxwell, Community Challenge coordinator, at (920) 217-5695 or e-mail lcmaxw@bellin.org.

“If you aren’t able to join a program, try making your own training schedule,” Van Straten said.  “Be sure to run or walk at least four days a week and mix in some cross training.  Any kind of activity that you can do is one step closer to living a healthier lifestyle.”
