Whether running, cheering, volunteering or cultivating the next generation of participants, Kathryn Geimer-Chojnacki’s Bellin Run connections run deep. Here, in her own words, is a look at a legacy that’s lasted 49 years and counting:
My husband and I have volunteered for the Friday Night’s Kids’ Run for several years. It has been wonderful watching these future runners start their running careers by racing the streets around Astor Park, including most of our grandchildren.
The Bellin Run dates back for us to the start in 1977. The original route went past my parent’s home in the 1300 block of Eliza Street. I ran then walked the first few years and when we had young children, they would sit on the front steps with their cousins and friends, including Nic and Deb Lyons’ children, cheering on their parents and aunts and uncles. Nic has managed to run all 49 races! As the children got older, most of them have run the race themselves.
When the virtual option was available, our daughter in Germany was able to run the race with her family and friends. In the first year of the 5K, I came in second in the 75-79 age group. I don’t mind getting old, and perhaps the run/walks such as the Bellin help the aging.
Coincidentally, my husband and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary in April, so it’s a special year for us as well … good years and treasured memories.
