Why I run the Bellin Run: Deb Diederich, Pulaski

May 17, 2011

At 44 years old, I have never run any kind of race. I always thought you had to be tall and lean to run. Then I decided to put on some running shoes last year after one of my girlfriends ran the race and I thought, what a great opportunity to spend time with her and get myself back into shape.

I started training on my own on January 1 of this year, in my basement and as of the end of March, we have trained together outside, where I love to be.

I am not, by any means, going to break any speed records, but it is about time I do something for me! As a mom, I put myself last, but now with my oldest son married and my youngest in college, I thought, what a great time to focus on me!

I have NEVER taken to anything like this before and stuck with it. So for all of you who think, “I would never be able to do that.” I am proof that you can.

My goal is simple, to run the best race I can and finish it! I look at this as something to build on, year after year, getting better every time.

This has never been about weight loss for me, although that is a welcome benefit. This is about getting in shape and feeling good. I am hitting small goals along the way that I never thought I would. I still do not keep up with my friend, but that is okay with me. I still have to walk a little here and there, but again, I am okay with that.

My plan on race day is to be able to run the whole thing and finish with a smile! After all, this is something I want for ME!
