Why I run the Bellin Run: John Klika, Menomonee Falls

May 18, 2011

I first ran the Bellin Run in 1977 on a whim; something to do as a kid growing up near Astor Park. The impact it has since had on all spectrums of my life cannot be understated.

Physically: Because of the Bellin Run, my physical well-being is a foundation of who I am. I've stayed in shape for years and have practiced what I preach to my family and friends. Being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes about 13 years ago, I now run to help manage my health. I run the Bellin because it continues to help me live longer and stay healthy and fit.

Family: I proposed to my wife of 18 years at the 6-mile mark of the Bellin Run. Each year I watch with pride as my wife and two children continue to run and walk the Bellin Run. I've also watched with great pride as 11 of my 13 brothers and sisters have run the Bellin. Seeing their joy over their Bellin Run accomplishments and the physical improvement training for the event has on their bodies is priceless. I run the Bellin because my family continues to benefit.

Socially: My life of running began with the first Bellin Run. I've met some of my best friends because of the Bellin Run and running. I continued to compete in high school, college and other endurance events since then. Every friendship is simply a few degrees away from the running that started with the first Bellin Run in 1977. I run the Bellin Run to sustain the friendships that I have cherished.

Support a cause: The Bellin Run has had a lasting positive impact on tens of thousands of people. The positive image it shines on Green Bay is invaluable. I run the Bellin Run to support what is good about Green Bay.
